Kate Winslet has built a career on authenticity, but her latest revelation may be one of her most personal yet. On the Dec. 24 episode of the Team Deakins podcast, the Oscar‑winning actress admitted that her earliest intimate experiences as a teenager were with women.
“I’ll share something I’ve never shared before,” Winslet, now 50, said. “Some of my first intimate experiences as a young teen were actually with girls. I’d kissed a few girls, and I’d kissed a few boys, but I wasn’t particularly evolved in either direction.”
Her candid reflection offered fans a glimpse into the curiosity and openness that shaped her adolescence — and, in many ways, her artistry.
How Teenage Curiosity Shaped Her Breakout Role

Winslet connected her teenage experiences to her breakout performance in Peter Jackson’s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures. The movie, which starred Winslet alongside Melanie Lynskey, explored the obsessive friendship between two teenage girls.
“At that stage in my life, I certainly was curious,” Winslet explained. “There was something about the really intense connection those two women had that I profoundly understood. I was so immediately sucked into the vortex of that world.”
Her ability to channel that intensity helped launch her career, paving the way for roles in Sense and Sensibility, Hamlet, and eventually Titanic, which catapulted her to international fame.
A Career Built on Honesty and Privacy
Despite her openness in recent years, Winslet has long guarded her private life. In a 2015 interview with WSJ. Magazine, she said: “No one really knows what has happened in my life. No one really knows why my first marriage didn’t last; no one knows why my second didn’t. And I’m proud of those silences.”
Today, Winslet is married to Edward Abel Smith and is mom to three children: Mia Threapleton, 25, Joe Mendes, 22, and Bear Blaze, 12.
Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Actors
Her revelation also ties into her advocacy for LGBTQ+ actors in Hollywood. In 2021, Winslet told The Sunday Times that many performers fear their careers could be jeopardized if their sexuality were revealed.
“I cannot tell you the number of young actors I know — some well known, some starting out — who are terrified their sexuality will be revealed and that it will stand in the way of their being cast in straight roles,” she said, calling the situation “f—– up.”

A New Chapter
Winslet recently made her directorial debut with the Netflix family drama Goodbye June, starring alongside Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, and Helen Mirren. Even as she continues to evolve professionally, her candid reflections remind fans why she remains one of Hollywood’s most respected voices.
By sharing her teenage experiences, Winslet not only revisits her past but also reinforces her message: curiosity, vulnerability, and honesty are powerful forces — both on screen and off.
